TikTok has ushered in a new era for fashion, with influencers gaining devoted followings during lockdown – see Alexandra Hildreth’s clever fashion predictions and Wisdom Kaye’s excellent styling videos. And if there’s anything we’ve learnt from the booming video platform, it’s that you can always rely on Gen Z to dredge up a long-departed trend. Case in point: the revival of leg warmers, an item of clothing last relevant when worn by Madonna in her aerobics-inspired “Hung Up” video circa 2005.

Take @annasgh0st, who uploaded a viral clip of herself styling leg warmers with a grungy edge that Avril Lavigne would be proud of – garnering more than 600,000 likes in the process. Others have taken a more DIY approach, fashioning custom pairs for themselves; @aphextwinsgf, for example, racked up hundreds of thousands of views by demonstrating how to turn an old cardigan into a set. Brands are capitalising on the formerly dated staple, too. Iris Law fronted the kitsch Ed Hardy by Siberia Hills campaign, wearing leg warmers with fluffy boots. (For what it’s worth, Billie Eilish beat everyone to the punch, sporting leg warmers with a form-fitting dress in October.)

“The 2000s and all of its trends are back, including leg warmers,” says New York-based designer Lindsay Vrckovnik, who’s responsible for Bella Hadid’s recent viral beanie hat moment. The Parsons graduate attributes her love for the retro trend to her days as a ballerina. “They’re similar to a pair of gloves or a hat; they can work with anybody’s style – there’s no wrong way to wear them! I’m currently working on super-chunky, thigh-high ones.”

If you’re wondering how to style leg warmers without looking like an extra in a straight-to-video film from the ’80s, take your cues from Vrckovnik, who teams her multi-coloured pairs with trainers (Kiko Kostadinov X Asics are her go-to) and joggers, Hailey Bieber-style. Stylist Michelle Li is another great leg-warmer pin-up – wearing hers with mint-green clogs, a sheer bolero, and matching tights. Madonna would approve.
